Mountain biker dies in accident on North Shore trail

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A 38-year-old mountain biker from Idaho has died in an accident on the North Shore.

It happened in Lynn Headwaters Regional Park around noon yesterday.

Corporal Richard De Jong with North Vancouver RCMP says two mountain bikers called police about a man who was unconscious on the Pipeline Trail.

It looks like the man had fallen about two metres and had serious head and neck injuries.

“It appears he had fallen off of a balance board, which is a five-foot level skill-testing [aparatus] mountain bikers go on,” says De Jong.

The man was wearing a helmet, but he was biking alone.

“At this point, the Coroners Service will be looking into the cause of the very traumatic death to this individual, who had his family up in Vancouver and of course, it’s very tragic for them,” notes De Jong.

He adds people need to take precautions when they go out in the back country. “Bike with a buddy if you can, let people know where you are, wear the appropriate gear, and practice safe biking.”
