Highway speed limit discussion in Chilliwack this week

CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – Should you be able to go 140 km/h once you’re past Hope?

The provincial review of speed limits is shifting to Chilliwack with an open house on Thursday. The discussion will focus on rural Highways 1, 3, and 5 heading east out of the Fraser Valley.

Mike Lorimer with the Ministry of Transportation says they’ve done comprehensive reviews of speed limits before, but a lot of things have changed since then.

“Over the last 10 years, we’ve put billions and billions into our road networks, vehicles have gotten safer… things have changed out there. It just makes sense, with those factors, to take another look at it,” he explains.

But Lorimer says the review will be about more than just highway speed limits.

“There’s also three other important components to the review; we are looking at slower-moving vehicles, wildlife, and the use of winter tires. So, when you look at those four aspects — when you include speed — they’re four themes that are common around the province, when you look at our rural highway segments.”

The open house takes place between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Coast hotel. Comments will be collected in a set of surveys.

“They have the choice of filling out a paper survey that we do have there… For everyone, including the people that do come, I think one of the best ways to do our survey is online. We have a website set up where they can go online, look at 52 different segments of highways around the province, and provide their feedback on that.”
