Vancouver councillor speaks out about criticism over captivity referendum idea

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A Vancouver city councillor is speaking out about criticism she is only supporting a referendum on whales being held in captivity for political reasons.

City Councillor Adriane Carr says keeping whales and dolphins at the Vancouver Aquarium should be phased out because it is cruel to keep them in this confined space.

However, her stance was criticized last night by those saying she is using this issue for political gain ahead of November’s civic election.

Carr says nothing could be further from the truth.

“My interest in this story is driven by public concern when you have petitions of tens of thousands of names saying please put a plebiscite question to the public, we need to engage the public on this issue.”

Carr’s motion was set to be heard today at city council today, but the discussion has been put off to tomorrow.

She says the Vancouver Park Board and the Aquarium need to come to some sort of agreement on phasing out the captivity six weeks before the November 15th election in order for it to be ready for a referendum.
