John Horgan may be acclaimed NDP leader tomorrow

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – New Democrats in this province have just one more sleep until they get their new leader.

John Horgan will be acclaimed as the party’s next boss, if no one else challenges him by tomorrow’s 5:00 p.m. deadline.

“If you are the candidate who is standing, and you’ve met all the requirements, and you’re the only candidate, you’re elected,” NDP President Craig Keating explains.

However, that deadline seems like nothing more than a formality at this point, as it looks like the party is moving forward as if Horgan already is the leader.

A coming-out party for him is planned for this Sunday in Vancouver.

“The leadership kick-off will be an opportunity for party members to meet with John at an event at the Renaissance Hotel [at] 2:00 p.m. and it’s going to begin [showcasing] John as the kind of balanced, passionate but approachable leader that he is,” Keating says.

Despite the lack of a leadership race, Keating insists Horgan’s acclamation shows a party in renewal.

“I think what we’re seeing is that there’s an amazing amount of enthusiasm for John within the party,” he says.

“He’s got the entirety of the caucus standing behind him, and New Democrats I meet in every corner of the province are very enthusiastic about John Horgan.”

Keating points out former NDP premiers Dave Barrett and Mike Harcourt were acclaimed as well.

Horgan became the last man standing in the race to replace Adrian Dix when Mike Farnworth withdrew his bid earlier this month.
