Heritage advocates fighting to save historical homes in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Local heritage advocates will rally in Vancouver’s West End tomorrow to save a home set to be torn down for condos.

One of the organizers, Caroline Adderson, says the Legg House is an example of a greater issue in the city.

“Over 1,000 demolition permits [were] issued [last year] in Vancouver and the great majority of them, over 900, were for single-family homes,” she says.

Adderson runs “Vancouver Vanishes,” a Facebook page where she posts pictures of character homes that have been torn down. “There’s only three of these grand estate homes left in Vancouver and, as of next month, there will be two.”

She says when homes like the Legg House are demolished, it’s a loss felt on many levels. “You take down the house, the stories go with it. No one can stand in front of a house and say, ‘Oh, I wonder who lived here in 1925?’ because that house doesn’t exist anymore.”

The rally is set for 3 p.m. “So the idea is to bring mementos of parts of Vancouver that are vanishing, houses that you’ve loved, pictures of them, messages to city hall, and we’re going to attach them to the fence,” she explains.
