Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival celebrating 26th year

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You can expect to hear a lot of shouting from False Creek this weekend.

One-hundred-thousand people are expected to watch 5,000 paddlers hit the water this weekend for the 26th annual Dragon Boat Festival.

Anita Webster with the festival says the event brings in more than $2.4 million to the local economy thanks to hotel stays and restaurant visits. “This year with a lot of visiting teams. We’ve got teams from Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, we even have a team from London, England. There’s a lot of people that come into the city because of this event.”

This week, city council approved the rezoning of land to build a permanent boat house for dragon boaters to use year-round.
