Lots of mosquito swarms popping up in parts of the Lower Mainland

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS1130) – They are blood-sucking and annoying, and can ruin any summer outing. We’re talking about mosquitoes.

The pests have been turning up in swarms in certain spots in the Lower Mainland. People in Maple Ridge or the Fort Langley area have probably noticed there are a lot of mosquitoes around looking for a quick bite.

Scott McMahon is with Culex, a company that sprays for the insects across most of the Lower Mainland.

“This species of mosquito is typically what we call a nuisance mosquito, as opposed to the kind that carries West Nile Virus. This one causes an annoyance, but there is no real health implications, no public health risk,” he explains.

McMahon notes there are ways you can keep them away.

“For personal protection, its long sleeve clothes [and] light-coloured clothing. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours. Personal repellant with DEET or another active ingredient we find is helpful is Picaridin.”

McMahon advises you to change bird bathes regularly and not keep standing water for more than seven to 10 days, as mosquitoes need that long for their eggs to hatch.
