Dozens register to speak for or against captivity at Vancouver Aquarium

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A lineup of speakers on keeping whales and dolphins at the Vancouver Aquarium could take until Monday to get through.

Most of the roughly 130 speakers are against keeping the mammals at the Aquarium saying it’s not natural for them to be held in captivity.

This woman believes it’s too late for the animals to be released, but says they can still be helped. “Stop having them perform, I think that’s the least we can do for them. Also, build a bigger tank or sea pan.”

Jamie-Lee Hamilton says it’s a matter of morals. “We can be given as much science that we want, but I think it comes down to what our beliefs are around the ethical treatment of highly intelligent creatures.”

Sue waters says it not only harms the animals, but it also sets a bad example for children. “I think the way the world is hopefully going, they will look back on it and go ‘it sucks that I was part of that as a kid, or brought into it.'”

Many are asking the Park Board to hold a referendum on the issue.
