Security cameras installed after increased violence in Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – A string of often violent confrontations between groups in Abbotsford has led to the installation of security cameras in the city’s west end.  And police claim they have the full support of the community.

Constable Ian MacDonald says the ongoing feud between mostly South Asian youths died down in July but has recently flared up again.

“We seem to encounter them more and more regularly in the Townline area and based on conversations that we were having with them, there seemed to be more issues at play.  Our sense of it, is there was more imminent risk that there were going to be incidents.”

He says the cameras are in hot spots, meant to deter both groups, and police are also increasing patrols.

“We’ve met with neighbours.  They have been supportive of the fact.  They feel in light of the large number of incidents that have taken place since May, that there is a need for this deterrent because of the heightened tensions that we have seen since the beginning of August.”

There have been dozens of targeted attacks on property over the last several months, resulting in thousands of dollars worth of damage to cars and homes and most of these incidents are taking place late at night.
