Men’s health issues a tough topic to discuss: Vancouver Movember

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you’ve been seeing a few moustaches growing on normally bare faces, it’s likely for Movember, the annual campaign to raise awareness for men’s health issues.

You don’t often see two men talking about their latest prostate exam on their lunch break

But Alex Skimmer with Vancouver Movember says you can use the moustache as a way to bring up serious health topics. “It’s a great conversation starter. It sort of kicks starts the conversation about mental health or prostate and testicular cancer especially among men that you are not likely to have in another context.”

Skimmer notes if you’re a little uneasy start with people in your comfort zone. “I think one of the great things about doing Movember with your family members, whether it is your dad or your brothers and your friends is that you sort of go through the awkwardness together, you sort of get that out of the way and that is really what makes it a great opportunity.”
