Storm wreaks havoc on some BC highways

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The winter storm that was supposed to slam Metro Vancouver over the weekend didn’t have quite the impact Environment Canada expected.

But it’s a different situation if you head north or east; the snow has been wreaking havoc on out-of-town highways.

While we’ve been seeing rain in Metro Vancouver this morning, the Fraser Valley hasn’t been so lucky, with cars struggling along Highway 1 in the Chilliwack and Abbotsford areas.

Some of the images and stories coming from the Coquihalla and Sea-to-Sky Highways have been downright scary.

There were a few white-knuckle moments; cars have become stranded, strewn on the roads, unable to go any further.

Bob Gilowski with VSA Highway Maintenance, which clears the Coquihalla Highway, says you should only be on the highway if your car has what it needs to handle those conditions.

“That really is a given because right now, it is mandatory to have winter tires on your passenger vehicles and the transport trucks carrying chains,” he says.

“We’ve had these types of situations before, so we just want to remind the traveling public to slow down during their travels,” he adds.

The snow has been a good thing for local ski hills, like Mt. Seymour, where the main runs remain closed.

Don’t expect things to dry out quite yet; a rainfall warning is in effect for Metro Vancouver for today.
