This allergy season may be the worst in five years

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Have you been dealing with a stuffy nose, watery eyes and itchy skin lately?  The warm winter weather we’ve been experiencing lately means allergy season has started early.

“In the past it’s really peaked about the first week of March and now we’re starting to see it, certainly, in mid-February,” explains Dr. Bob Schellenberg.

He says just because the season is underway, it doesn’t mean it will end any sooner and he believes this just might be the worst year for allergies since 2010.

“Adding to the natural weather aspects is the well-known changes just with temperature, carbon dioxide and particulate pollution — all increasingly the allergenicity, if you would, of the tree pollen in particular.”

“Vegetation pays attention to weather as well, so we’ve seen that before, although the season is increasing anyway when we’ve looked over the last decade and so forth.  The season is getting longer and pollen counts are getting higher.”

Schellenberg adds many people won’t get much of a reprieve from their allergies until we’re into May.
