Local women join thousands around world for International Women’s Day

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Like many other places around the world, women marched and waved placards in Vancouver to commemorate International Women’s Day.

The local event featured a walk along Commercial Drive from Clark Park to Grandview Park and a rally.

“We’re standing up for women’s rights as far as getting affordable childcare,” said one woman in the march.

“We should be making sure we’re moving forward and not backwards,” said another.

“I think it’s really important to point out that women are still marginalized, both systemically and socially,” said a third.

The afternoon rally was hosted by the BC Federation of Labour.

President Irene Lanzinger says this province is especially difficult to live in for single mothers and their kids.

“If you are the child of a single mother, you have a 50 per cent chance of growing up in poverty. It’s a shameful statistic.”

Lanzinger says BC is the only province in Canada without a poverty reduction plan.
