Province hiring advisor to help the VSB balance its budget

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The provincial government has announced it will hire an independent advisor to audit the Vancouver School Board.

Victoria will pick up the cost, expected to be around $180,000.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender says he was written a letter by the newly elected VSB trustees warning the school board would end the year with a deficit upwards of $18-million.

It’s not the first time they’ve made such a warning, so he wants a collaborative approach for a hard look at VSB finances to find every possible efficiency and bring in a balanced budget.

“That we do not see ourselves in the same position where the blame game goes on, and there is sense by the parents and people within any school district that cuts are going to have to be made to education programs, which I do not believe to be the case.”

The auditor is still being chosen and Fassbender did not suggest what efficiencies might be found.
