BC Fed to hold monthly rallies for higher minimum wage

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – People across the province are planning to continue demonstrating in favour of a higher minimum wage.

Rallies were held on Sunday in a few BC cities, after the government’s announcement of a twenty-cent increase earlier this week.

Aaron Ekman with the BC Federation of Labour says despite the announcement, he and others are committed to keeping the pressure on government.

He says demonstrations were held in Penticton and in Nanaimo Sunday.

“We’ll continue to do these on the 15th of every month, and petitions are being signed quite frequently around the province, and the response from the public has been overwhelmingly positive,” he maintains.

“There always has been a requirement for pressure from the public in order to convince them that they have to make the right decision on this, and so we’re committed, despite the announcement they made last week for two measly dimes to be added to minimum wage.”

Ekman argues the 20-cent-an-hour increase won’t be enough to lift anyone out of poverty.

As of September 15, the minimum wage will be $10.45.

Increases each September thereafter will be based on the cost of living.
