‘Enough was enough six weeks ago,’ say police after another shooting in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Police are searching for clues — and pleading for the violence to stop — after the latest shooting in Surrey left one man dead early yesterday morning.

A public forum is taking place tomorrow night, with the aim of finding solutions.

“Tomorrow night is about engagement with the community,” says Sergeant Lindsey Houghton with the Gang Task Force.

Houghton says the forum is being held at Tamanawis Secondary, not far from where many of the nearly two dozen shootings since March have happened.

“We want to have that conversation. We want to hear from people. We want to hear potential solutions because we want the community to be involved in those solutions.”

He says we reached the tipping point long before the death of 22-year-old Arun Bains yesterday.

“Enough was enough six weeks ago. We shouldn’t get to this point. There’s enough information and educational information and prevention information out there where people can access it and become informed.”

Houghton feels the apparent turf war among low-level players in the local drug trade is not too far removed from the gang violence of 2008 and 2009.

“We need to once again remind people of the dangers of this lifestyle and we need to reach out to them and engage the community.”
