Scammers using varying methods to get your money ahead of tax deadline

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Tax-related scams rise every year as we near the filing deadline, but there’s an old-fashioned twist this year — phone calls.

“Some recent telephone scams — there were threatening or forceful language to scare the taxpayers into paying fictitious debt to the CRA,” explains Daljeet Grewal is a team leader with the Canada Revenue Agency in Surrey.

She adds the calls were threatening to the point that the taxpayers became “worried and frazzled.” Grewal says that if you get one of these calls report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

This season is also producing the usual increase in phishing e-mails that direct people to websites that look like the CRA in order to steal taxpayers’ personal information.

The deadline to file your taxes is the end of the month.
