Burrard Bridge to be closed for big yoga class: Premier

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver drivers will have one less bridge to use to get to their Father’s Day brunch in a couple of weeks and that’s because it’s being closed to cars for International Day of Yoga.

Citing economic ties to India, Premier Christy Clark has announced the Burrard Street Bridge will be closed in both directions from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m. on June 21st.

Clark began organizing the event shortly after a visit from the Indian prime minister earlier this year.

So, why not hold the event in a park, instead of shutting down a major thoroughfare? “It’s a busy bridge and I think it makes a really wonderful statement to close it to all that busyness and welcome a couple thousand people to be present and reflective. It’s the exact opposite of busy traffic.”

The event is being dubbed ‘OmtheBridge.’

It appears the City of Vancouver is behind the idea as it has offered a small grant to make the event happen. The class will be live-streamed online and the premier says it will show just how beautiful Vancouver is to the world.

“I don’t think there will be a picture in the world more beautiful than the one of the thousands of yoga mats on the Burrard Street Bridge on, hopefully, a sunny day.  I really want to welcome everybody to be a part of that,” adds Clark.
