Federal NDP promises to improve housing affordability, infrastructure and transit

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair says he has a plan to make Vancouver a stronger city with three key components.

Improving Vancouver’s core infrastructure, investing in transit expansion and making housing more affordable are all part of the NDP proposal according to Mulcair.

“Right now we are looking to free up $500 million at the CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp) level to build mostly affordable rental housing,” he explains. “We want to make sure the federal government plays overall a far more active role we’ve stopped that more than 20 years ago and it’s having a catastrophic effect. There is a lot of insecurity right now with a lot of the co-op and social housing that was built back then because that funding is drying up.”

He also wants earmark $5.7 billion to go towards transit and infrastructure.

Mulcair was quick to add everything being promised has been costed out. “We’ll do things differently from the other parties but everything will show exactly where that money is coming from and how it is costed.”

He adds his party would appoint a federal minister of urban affairs so that a single person is responsible and accountable for making the plan a reality.
