One-fifth of RCMP officers promised for Surrey are deployed

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Some of the 100 police officers promised by the federal government for Surrey are on their way.  Despite that, there is still no timeline when all of them will be on the ground.

Unsafe and frustrated are the ways Doug Elford with the Newton Community Association describes how people in Surrey are feeling right now.

He says it’s good news almost two dozen officers have been deployed, but he has a lot of questions.

“When will the rest of them be deployed as promised? That was the mayor’s promise within a year, yet we’re not getting firm answers from the federal government. How will they be deployed in our community?”

“We appreciate the fact that it’s a priority, but where? When? How? We’re not getting the real questions answered.”

Last month, the federal government announced 100 officers would be heading to Surrey to help deal with the recent increase gang-related violence but it has given no indication when the other 80 will arrive.

“I have made it a priority to ensure that Surrey would receive the RCMP members that they had requested. The Harper Government will continue to work hard to ensure that the streets of Surrey – and communities across the country – are safe,” says Federal Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney.

The deployment of the RCMP members is part of $3.5 million in funding for crime prevention for Surrey.
