Enforcing new left-lane hog legislation will be tough: RCMP

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Mounties say it’s going to be hard to enforce the new left-lane hog legislation that was introduced a week ago today.

Staff Sergeant Dale Somerville says it’s the kind of law that boils down to more of an opinion between the driver and the officer.

“Officers are going to make a judgement at the time whether or not the offence and the elements of it have been covered off to issue a ticket and prove beyond a reasonable doubt in court.”

He says it’s an uncommon violation, unlike distracted driving or speeding.

“It’s an issue that the police are definitely concerned about and we are actively going to enforce it. But these first few months of any new legislation, we try to stay more on an educational basis rather than an enforcement basis.”

He says they’ve handed out a few tickets in the one week since the province introduced it. The fine $167 and three penalty points.
