Local homeless shelter feeling the heat

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The less-fortunate can be the most vulnerable during a heat wave. A shelter on the Downtown Eastside has a desperate plea for help thanks to the extreme weather.

The warmer than average June has already cleaned out homeless shelters like the Union Gospel Mission of hot weather supplies.

Keela Keeping with the UGM says they really need things like bottled water, light clothing and even sunscreen. I know that any time the weather gets extreme, either direction it had a negative impact on our community so with the heat wave it’s really important for people to stay hydrated they often don’t have access to clean water right away so having water bottle that they can fill and water bottles that are full is extremely helpful

“Most people are kind of stuck outside so they are at risk of sunburn, heatstroke, that sort of thing. What we are trying to do is gather the supplies that we can have available so we can prevent some of these problems and to help if they do come up.”

She adds if you see a person on the street who looks in distress from the heat, don’t be afraid to go over and make sure they are OK.

Anyone who can help is encouraged to drop them off at their Downtown Eastside shelter.
