Biodegradable dyes help keep lawns green during drought

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Whether it’s artificial turf or creative landscaping, the ongoing drought and water restrictions that come with it, have plenty of people in the Lower Mainland looking at grass alternatives.

Another local company says it’s business is booming, likely because their product doesn’t force you to tear up the grass.

“It is a biodegradable, non-toxic lawn dye that’s made from all-natural elements and it contains zero chemicals. And what it does is it allows home owners to have a perfect green lawn all summer without turning on their sprinkler,” says Nicole Lundy with LawnLift Canada.

The technology itself has been available in the US for a number of years but Lundy’s company only licensed it Canada three short years ago.

She says business has spiked in the last three months as people try and avoid using sprinklers.

“A lot of people at first laughed. When you say grass painting, they don’t believe it. We’ve had customers, where the cities have actually gone and knocked on their doors to give them a fine because the lawn is green, and then they’ve replied ‘No we’ve painted it,’ and the city can’t believe it.”

Critics argue it’s just painting lawns, but at around $70 for an average lawn, Lundy says it’s a viable alternative.

“(It gives you) perfect green grass. It’s instant, you spray it on with a garden sprayer, and it’s permanent until it grows out or it’s mowed off. It’s a cosmetic fix for sure and a way for homeowners to avoid those sprinkler fines for the people that really do want that green look.”

She says once it’s applied, you can use your lawn like normal. “It’s appealing to the eye. It is also safe for pets so it’s actually used for people who just even have dog spots, it covers up those brown spots.”

In the US the technology is also widely-used on athletic fields and even golf courses.
