Egyption verdict in Mohamed Fahmy’s retrial postponed

EGYPT (NEWS 1130) – The much-anticipated verdict for Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy, who faces widely denounced terror charges in Egypt, has been postponed.

Fahmy says the case is now going back to court on Sunday, but no reason was given for the delay.

He says it was hard even finding out about the postponement today, with no official word being given as he and journalists waited outside a Cairo court.

There is speculation Fahmy’s verdict could be pushed back even further because two judicial officials speaking on condition of anonymity say the judge presiding over the case is seriously ill.

Fahmy says the delay is frustrating and calls the lack of information around the postponement insulting. Fahmy was the Cairo bureau chief for Qatar-based satellite news broadcaster Al Jazeera English when he and two colleagues were arrested in December 2013.

They were charged with a slew of offences, including supporting the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, a banned organization, and with fabricating footage to undermine the country’s national security.
