Violent crime in Surrey is up according to new stats from the RCMP

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Surrey has seen a violent crime increase of 36 per cent when compared with this time last year.
The Mounties attribute this uptick largely to the more than 20 shootings the city saw South of the Fraser between March and June.
“The majority of that is attributed to the shooting series that we had involving the low-level drug trade,” says Staff Sergeant Dale Carr. “Then we had a marked increase in reported sexual assaults. Of those 88 per cent of the offenders are known to the victim.”
Sexual assaults have increased 53 per cent year over year.
“We’d like to think that some of the rise that we’ve experienced, probably not to the extent that we’ve seen the rise, but some of that, is accountable to the fact that we’ve seen more people willing to report,” says Carr.
Some good news though — homicides are down 14 per cent, and property crime has seen a 7 percent dip.
