Public inquiry launched into three deaths involving Abbotsford hospital

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – The BC Coroner’s service has launched an inquest into why three patients died after leaving Abbotsford Regional Hospital in separate cases. All three deaths involved people who were at the hospital for treatment for mental health issues.

Sarah Charles, 41, and Sebastien Abdi, 19, both died on April 26th of this year. Brian Geisheimer, 30, died on December 28th, 2014.

Because these deaths are now the subject of an official inquiry, there isn’t much more Barb McLintock with the coroner’s service can say. “The main similarity simply is that they were all in the same hospital, in the mental health area of it and that they very shortly after they left the hospital, they ended up deceased.”

The deaths are not considered homicides, but McLintock can’t say if the three took their own lives.

A jury will hear all the facts surrounding the deaths and make recommendations on how to prevent similar deaths in the future. The inquest starts May 16th, 2016.
