North Shore Rescue team wants help keeping volunteers

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With record-breaking calls to the North Shore Rescue team, the volunteer program is having problems keeping people.

So the group plans to meet with provincial officials to try and find an answer.

“People are walking away because they are saying ‘why would I want to do that?’ It’s not realistic and in the long-run it’s probably not healthy for my family or myself,” says Mike Danks, the North Shore Rescue team leader.

He says people often don’t understand what they do. “I think a lot of people don’t recognize that we are volunteers and this does have an effect on our families and our work life.”

Danks says some ideas have been tossed around, like being payed for on call duty. He’s inviting all stakeholders to bring forward ideas to solve this.

“What the answer is? I’m not sure at this point, but I do know that this is something we need to sit down collectively and look at.”
