A poll of polls: New seat projection tool for the federal election

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you aren’t willing to put your faith in polls during this campaign, you have plenty of company — they have been all over the place.

There is a new tool from our friends at the French-language version of Maclean’s that just might give us the most accurate picture yet.

L’Actualite has partnered up with Vox Pop Labs to launch “le signal,” a poll of polls.

Hundreds of polls dating back to 2008 have been used so far to come up with the current results of “le signal.”

Clifton van der Linden with Vox Pop says the success of different firms is looked at.

“They developed models that allowed them to apply the bias of different polling firms to future events — to future elections — to try to more accurately forecast or predict that outcome,” he explains.

van der Linden notes new polls are being added every day.

He says the model has been tested against past election campaigns. “In all cases, it has performed better than the aggregate performance of individual polls.”

Right now, “le signal” finds the Conservatives and the Liberals in a virtual tie.
