More security cameras going up in Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – With no sign of an end to a dangerous feud between two groups of teens in Abbotsford, more security cameras are going up. Some of the major incidents over the past 18 months have included shootings, stabbings and homicides.

Constable Ian MacDonald says signs have been posted advising people that many public areas on Townline Hill are now under video surveillance.

“We have held public forums and public meetings. Almost unanimously, everyone that we have spoken to that has shown up to those meeting from the neighbourhood has actually requested more cameras,” he explains. “Certainly we have found that in the areas where the cameras have been deployed it has absolutely has worked as an effective suppression technique.”

MacDonald notes more coverage was needed. “Regrettably, there have been a few occasions where we have moved cameras. Seems those who are gang-involved and those who are crime-involved have an awareness of the movement of the cameras so on a couple of occasions we have actually had incidents take place after we have moved cameras.”

He adds enforcement has also been stepped up with gang teams going into the area
