Unfair to say Surrey doesn’t get enough funding for housing: Coleman

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Advocates argue Surrey gets the short end of the stick when it comes to housing. But BC’s minister responsible says that just isn’t true.

Housing Minister Rich Coleman says it’s not fair to compare Surrey to older cities like Vancouver because it has been involved in housing projects that go back 50 years.

“You’re taking money from a long period of time — you bundle it up and it looks like a lot more money,” says Coleman.

“But the reality is there’s been signficant investment made in Surrey — buying buildings, putting in new facilities, ready to do more whenever we can get something from the community… It’s always important that we work with the community.”

The BC government promised today to provide $400,000 towards a temporary winter shelter in Surrey, as well as more money for extreme weather response shelters.
