Poll finds Liberals leading ahead of the election

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Canadians cast their ballots in less than 48 hours and another poll is suggesting a changing of the guard in Ottawa. It looks like Justin Trudeau and the Liberals are on the cusp of a majority government, according to a new survey from Mainstreet Research/Postmedia.

It finds the Grits have 37.8 per cent support, followed by the Conservatives at 32.6 per cent, and the NDP in a distant third with 20.8. Executive Vice President David Valentin says that trend is also being reflected here in BC. “Where the Liberals are at 33 per cent, the Conservatives are at 32 per cent, and not too far back, you’ve got the NDP at 24 per cent, and of course, that’s a big reversal of what we saw at the beginning of the campaign, where the NDP were very, very dominant in the province.”

Despite an 11-week campaign, the pollster points out nine per cent of voters in BC wouldn’t know who to vote for if the election were today. “But we do see, and this is something that we’ve been seeing pretty consistently in the campaign, that undecided voters are leaning towards the Liberal party.”

By region, the Grits are in the lead in Greater Vancouver, while the NDP continue to dominate on Vancouver Island, while the Conservatives are out in front across the rest of the province.

Valentin expects BC and Quebec to have the most three-way-races and predicts lots of late night drama as the results come in. “What’s interesting to me is how many seats could turn in British Columbia. I think there is no safe seat in BC right now. And even when you look at the seats on Vancouver Island, that’s where the Green Party is doing so well that they could take up a couple of new extra seats.”

“And of course, BC is the last province who will be reporting on election numbers, so, you’re going to be keeping us up awake all night as we wait to find out who British Columbians voted for.”

The polls are open from 7am to 7pm on Monday.
