Telephone scam on the rise in Surrey

By

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Surrey RCMP are dealing with over 600 complaints for a familiar telephone scam. Mounties are warning the spike in fraud seems to be getting worse.

We’ve seen this making the rounds across Canada for the past two months and now its here – with scammers pretending to be from Canada Revenue or Citizenship and Immigration.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann says those on the phone will demand money or face arrest or deportation. “Never will either of those two agencies demand that you send money by wire transfer or pre-paid credit card. In fact sometimes even the demand is just for information fooling the people that they may be entitled to some kind of income tax rebate.”

Schumann says the scammers seem to target a specific demographic. “Fortunately not a lot of people are being victimized by the ones who are being victimized are generally
Elderly persons and also people who are new to the country so they are more susceptible to falling prey to these types of scams.”

He asks anyone who thinks they’ve been targeted to call police.
