How should we regulate the marijuana industry?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Legalizing marijuana was one of Justin Trudeau’s campaign promises, but how should we regulate the industry?

“I don’t believe that regulating marijuana requires anyone to reinvent the wheel,” says Paul Armentano with the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, based out of the US.

He says much like in Oregon, Colorado and Washington State, Canada has liquor and tobacco laws in effect and could use similar ones to regulate marijuana.

“There are restrictions in place that limit the ability to advertise these products and services, there are regulations in place in regards to how these products are labelled, what the dosing of the per serving size may be, there are restrictions, of course that would impose punitive sanctions if people are to operate while in an impaired condition.”

Other groups say it will take time to figure out what to do in each region across the country.

“There are going to be some hurdles because this is something that’s a little new, but in the end there’s nothing that can’t be done with marijuana that were already doing with alcohol,” says Mason Tvert is with the Marijuana Policy Project.

Tvert says there are hundreds of millions of dollars in marijuana sales taking place in regulated stores across the US so Canada would also benefit economically.

He believes people will still question the merits of marijuana so education will be key going forward.
