Marijuana breathalyzer technology in the works

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The legalization of marijuana will come with some roadblocks.

People can be arrested if officers suspect they are high behind the wheel, but it’s hard to have evidence hold up in court. One company is trying to develop technology to make sure charges stick.

It’s a roadside breathalizer that would provide information to the courts to convict people of driving impaired. The company behind it is Cannabix.

Its president Kal Malhi says he can’t give an exact timeline for the tech, but does have a goal. “An estimation will be that within two years, our goal is to have it court certified and be able to market it to law enforcement.”

Malhi says this tool could help put a model in place to curb the habit.

“We have to have some policies in place that ensures public safety and this continued myth or belief that it’s okay to get high and drive has to stop and there has to be deterrents for that.”
