Big expectations for Vancouver’s 2016 cruise ship season

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver’s cruise ship season won’t be over for another month, but there are already big expectations about 2016.

Carmen Ortega with Port Metro Vancouver says a low loonie and a global rise in demand for cruising are two of the factors at play. “That always helps [as well as] the destination. Vancouver continues to be a very attractive place to go to.”

Ortega notes there has also been a global rise in demand for cruises, which resulted in solid numbers for 2015. “It’s been a successful 2015 season here at Canada Place and by the end of this year we are expecting to have about 800,000 passengers that we have welcomed here in Vancouver.”

Next year is anticipated to be the busiest since 2009; more than 829,000 people are expected to come through Vancouver. But that is still down from the high in 2002 when there were more than 1.1 million cruise passenger leaving or arriving in the city.
