North Shore Rescue to Vancouver hikers: ‘We need to have a talk’

NORTH SHORE (NEWS 1130) – Note to hikers: It’s not summer!

A member of North Shore Rescue has written an open letter to anyone who heads out on our local trails after seeing what he calls “some very troubling things” yesterday on Mount Seymour.

The sunshine drew hundreds of hikers to the North Shore, but despite snow, ice and bone-chilling winds, John Blown says the vast majority of were completely unprepared for the conditions.

Blown says he witnessed people in leather street shoes with no tread, capri pants, and even cowboy boots. There was also a lack of jackets, gloves, toques, backpacks, maps, and knowledge of the trails.

“We would really prefer that our call stats do not increase for the year – we don’t need any more searches, medical rescues or fatalities,” Blown writes in his blog.

“So please share with your friends – the message is obviously not getting out there.”
