Interfaith pilgrimage in Surrey to honour victims of attacks in Paris, Beirut

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – The goal is to bring together people of different religions and backgrounds to honour the victims of the recent attacks in Paris and Beirut.

An interfaith pilgrimage in Surrey is planned for tomorrow. It will bring together Christians, atheists, Sikhs and Muslims and foster friendship and understanding.

“We decided that actually doing something rather promptly after that would be important — sort of a public display of solidarity with those who were victims,” says Scott Reynolds with the Surrey Interfaith Council.

He tells us it’s easy to respond to these incidents with fear, but “it’s a lot more fruitful if we respond with a compassionate orientation.”

“One of the ways that we can cultivate that sense of empathy is by actually spending time with people of different traditions who are in our own communities,” he adds.

The interfaith pilgrimage will start at Northwood United Church in Surrey tomorrow at 9 a.m. and wrap up at the Surrey Jamea Masjid in time to join the Muslim community for prayers at 12:30 p.m.
