Operation Red Nose kicks off another holiday season tonight

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS 1130) – If you’ve had a few drinks and can’t catch a cab, how are you planning to get home after a holiday party?

Operation Red Nose launches tonight across the country, with thousands of volunteers helping get people home safely.

“Not only do they get home safely — their cars also get home safely. One of the impediments to people taking taxis is they’re always frustrated that the next day, they’ve got to somehow get back to where they were to pick up their cars,” says Chris Wilson with the campaign.

He notes the program will hit a milestone this year.

“It’ll be the two-millionth ride given, at some point on Saturday, it’s anticipated. The program has been running for over 30 years across Canada. This is the 20th year in BC.”

Operation Red Nose is in 104 communities across the country, with more than 50,000 volunteers — 4,300 in BC alone. It runs Friday and Saturday nights in the lead up to Christmas and also on New Year’s Day.
