New warning decals highlight the dangers of fentanyl

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver Coast Health wants young people to know more about the dangers of fentanyl. New warnings about the deadly narcotic are going up in Vancouver, targeting bathrooms in clubs that see recreational drug use.

Dr. Mark Lysyshyn with Vancouver Coastal Health explains why they are focusing on bars downtown. “The people dying due to fentanyl are actually not people who live in the Downtown Eastside. They are people who live in other parts of the region and they are not people who are using drugs by injection, they are people who are taking pills or snorting drugs or smoking drugs.”

And users may not know the powerful synthetic narcotic is in their dose.

Lysyshyn explains they feature pictures of drug paraphernalia arraigned in designs like a cross and a flat-lining heart monitor. “Basically they are going to go on counters or on toilet paper dispensaries or on the back of toilets. It sort of depends on the layout of the bathroom, but it is meant to be in the private areas of bathrooms where people may use drugs.”

Fentanyl was linked to the death of a North Vancouver couple in their home this summer, found in their system along with other drugs.
