Coquitlam councilor calling for Uber

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – The City of Coquitlam is calling on the province to get with the program and open the door for ridesharing services like Uber to get established.

This request comes in the form of a letter endorsed by council.

It’s generally accepted that there aren’t enough cabs to properly provide service to the people of our region.

Frustrated by this reality, especially when it comes to people with mobility issues, city councilor Teri Towner put together a motion which will ask the province to get serious about ridesharing.

“There is a trend towards people moving, slowly, away from their personal vehicles,” says Towner. “More and more people, for their little jaunts around town and whatnot, will just call up an Uber driver or hop in a [carsharing vehicle] and do it that way.”

Towner was partially inspired by using Uber in other cities, where she had good experiences.

“I think there’s a lot of concern about safety, and I think there’s also a concern about the taxicab industry,” says Towner. “But I’ve been studying this issue for many, many months if not longer, and every single city that has ridesharing in place, taxicabs still exist.”

Towner’s motion to send a letter to the province passed with a vote of 8 to 1.
