North Van Mounties warn of a new phone scam

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Mounties in North Vancouver want you to be aware of a scammer targeting people over the phone.

Someone has been posing as a police constable asking for $200 that would go towards local community improvement programs.

“In one case a citizen said they would not provide credit card information over the phone and requested that additional information be sent through the mail. At this point the male caller said he would transfer the person to another agent and the line was disconnected,” says Corporal Richard De Jong.

He adds the RCMP does not do any fundraising over the phone or through email. “Like any request for donations, the public is encouraged to research the organization or charity thoroughly prior to making any donations.”

De Jong isn’t points out scams like this can be common during the holidays when people are more giving. He says if you get a call or email that appears to be like the one making the rounds right now, don’t respond to it and call police.
