Need some tech tips for the last-minute holiday shopper?

If you’ve been holding off on the holiday shopping, we have some last minute tips for putting some tech under the tree.

For those really splurging on a big ticket gift this year, a 4K TV might be a good bet.

“They are everywhere this year, for a very good reason. The picture quality is absolutely stunning,” says Mike Yawney, the Gadget Guy for Breakfast Television on City.

“We are talking four times the resolution of HD TV and when you see one for the first time your jaw drops,” he tells NEWS 1130.

And the price is also dropping with a 4K television that went for $10,000 last year selling for $2,000 or even less this year.

“The other thing is that we are also finally seeing 4K content. Last year they were all running on demo loops in the store to show what they were capable of but, when you took them home, you didn’t have 4K content to play. This year that has changed with even streaming services like shomi providing 4K programming.”

Yawney says drones are also a popular gift idea.

“They are hot. You can get some amazing aerial shots, you can make home movies with them and they are fun to fly. But drones are in a grey area right now. In the US, we are seeing a lot of regulations on where you can fly drones — where they are legal and where they are illegal — and Canada is a little bit behind the times. The question is where you will be able to use them in the new year.”

For the gamer, a popular gift this year offers a twist on the traditional offerings.

“There’s one game that’s getting a lot of attention because it mixes two amazing things — video games and Lego,” says Yawney. “It’s called Lego Dimensions and it is a ‘toys to life’ game. All the little figurines you put on the portal come to life in the game and what I really like about it is the fact it focuses on building skills. Not only do you get to play characters from all these different worlds like Scooby Doo, Dr. Who and Jurassic Park, but you get to build the characters from Lego. As you get through the game and upgrade your vehicles, you actually get to tear apart the vehicle in real life and rebuild it with new pieces before continuing to play the game.”

There is a catch, however.

“It is little bit of a money pit. To unlock the entire Lego Dimensions game, you have to buy all these little expansion packs and Lego kits. Each one costs from $16 to $30 and that’s on top of the more than $100 for the game itself.”

Yawney says Hoverboards and other electronic self-balancing scooters are also a hot buy but, before you invest in one, check into local regulations.

They could be illegal depending on what city you live in.
