What editors say about CP’s female athlete of the year

Golf phenom Brooke Henderson became the first Canadian to win on the LPGA Tour in more than a decade this year, rocketing into the top 20 in the world rankings in the process. Not bad for someone who just celebrated her 18th birthday a few months ago. Henderson capped her impressive season Monday by winning the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award as The Canadian Press female athlete of the year, earning 37 per cent of the votes by editors and broadcasters from across the country. Here are some of their quotes:

“What a year for young Canadian female athletes, but Henderson’s accomplishments are singular and at the time, were jaw-dropping. This may be the first of a few of these awards for Henderson.” — Dylan Purcell, Sports Editor, Lethbridge Herald.

“Brooke Henderson put women’s golf in Canada back on the map with her performance, which included two fifth-place finishes in LPGA Tour majors.” — Steve McAllister, Managing Editor – Sports, Yahoo Canada.

“Already a top-flight golfer at such a young age. Proved she can compete — and be successful — against the best of the best in a global sport.” — Greg Meachem, Sports Editor, Red Deer Advocate

”Quite the achievement winning a tournament on the LPGA tour at the age of 18.” Marc Brassard, Le Droit sports editor.
