Fort St. John man could lose arm after horrific dog attack

FORT ST. JOHN – Friends of a Fort St. John man severely injured in a dog attack on Christmas night say he remains in good spirits in an Edmonton hospital.

Kim Babcock says Robin Elgie’s arms were shredded as he tried to fend off two large dogs that pushed their way into his trailer home.

RCMP shot both large dogs, which had chased one of the couple’s pets into the house and then mauled Elgie and his partner Wendy Lee Baker when they tried to intervene.

Babcock says Elgie knows his injuries are life-altering.

“One arm is damaged really quite bad — the left one. And he knows he could lose it. He’s not angry; he says, ‘We’re so lucky. If we were by ourselves, they could have killed her.’ He’s an amazing person.”

“They cleaned up the trailer and the outside of the house,” adds Babcock. “They had it all steamed because it was terrible. It was a mess. They threw out some things that were soaked in blood and just cleaned it up.”

A GoFundMe page to raise money for the couple has surpassed its goal of $10,000 in barely 24 hours.

“I’m so excited for them that they won’t have to worry about paying the rent. They don’t have a lot, these people. It’s nice that they won’t have to worry about that… Robin is such a soft-hearted guy. He would give whatever he could to anybody; he’s just that kind of a man. Whether he could afford it or not, if somebody needed something, he would do all he could to help them,” says Babcock.
