Richmond asks to euthanize dog in holiday attack

RICHMOND (NEWS 11300 — The City of Richmond is asking that Yogi be destroyed.

Yogi is the Rottweiler-cross that been held in isolation since two sisters were attacked in a park two weeks ago.

One woman was bit more than 100 times but it’s a “sweet and loving” Yogi that’s being presented with a social media campaign and petition by the owner to save the dog.

“People are going to judge how yogi was taken care of and the other issues that are circulating through the media. At the end of the day we all deserve a second chance to rehabilitate,” says Lucas MacNeil in a Facebook post.

Ted Townsend, senior manager of communications for the City of Richmond, says the city filed an application in court Wednesday afternoon for the destruction of the animal.

“The court will hear the evidence that we present and if the owner chooses to present, they’ll hear from them and the judge will make the decision,” Townsend says.

“Our paramount concern is the safety of the public, so when we look at it through that lens we certainly also do consider the welfare of the animal as a factor.”
