Expensive real estate means no Park and Ride for certain cities

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Many suburbs have park and ride lots for people wanting to take transit for at least part of their commute.

People in Vancouver and Burnaby don’t have the option thanks to sky high real estate prices.

Vancouver is a spread out city and commuting to downtown from Burnaby can take up to 45 minutes during rush hour.

Not to mention that parking comes at a big premium if you can even find a spot.

But there are no options to park by a sky train station and take the train the rest of the way.

Jennifer Morland with TransLink says they’d like to have more park and rides, but it doesn’t make sense in all areas.

“Other than statutory right of ways, we don’t actually own any land around our SkyTrain stations, and with the current real estate market, it would be far too expensive and cost prohibitive for us to secure land.”

She says Vancouver and Burnaby commuters are better served with buses to get people to the SkyTrain.
