Delta fighting Alex Fraser queue jumpers

DELTA (NEWS 1130) — People on Delta’s Annacis Island are sick of Alex Fraser queue jumpers.

They’re the drivers who cut down from the Alex Fraser Bridge, in order to merge back on further ahead and cut out some time in their commute.

The problem is that to do so, they have to make illegal U-turns, cross centre lines or go through parking lots.

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson tells NEWS 1130 the traffic problems have grown a lot over the last few months.

“When you see somebody barreling down and jumping into the queue, it’s rude, it’s not acceptable, particularly for people that actually work and business that actually have to move their goods and equipment around from the island.”

Jackson says her office is meeting this week to try to come up with some kind of solution.

“We’ve tried in the past to do some re-jigging of certain signage and that sort of thing on Annacis Island but the volumes are increasing so we’re looking at everything at the moment.”

At this point Jackson isn’t sure if that will mean bringing recommendations to council, the province, or both.

Annacis’ business community has started an online petition to demand something be done soon. Ideas include cement barriers, so driver can’t just cross the solid yellow lines.
