BC search and rescue groups get a boost from the province

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The province is giving ten million dollars towards search and rescue crews in BC. This is only a one-time payment.

Minister of State for Emergency Preparedness, Naomi Yamamoto, says this funding will go where it’s needed most.

“Some teams, they need training, some teams, they need to upgrade vehicles and replace radios. It depends on the team. Some may need to do all of those things,” says Yamamoto. “They will look at what’s required across the BC search and rescue world. In BC, that’s about 2,500 volunteers and 80 teams in communities across BC.”

And while this is a one-time payment, Yamamoto says search and rescue groups are working on more changes.

“They’ve been working with Emergency Management BC, who has some responsibility for the search and rescue operations in BC, to develop an alternative support model.”
