Medical marijuana producers eye changes for advertising regulations

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – Some of Canada’s biggest producers of medical marijuana want to see advertising rules for pot like the ones applied to alcohol, as they prepare for the promised legalization of the recreational market.

A concerted policy push is underway from Tweed Inc., Mettrum Ltd. and Bedrocan Canada Inc. — three licensed producers that operate under Health Canada’s medical marijuana program.

They are urging the government to move quickly to create and implement legislation for the coming recreational market in order to avoid a “Wild West” scenario.

The Liberal government, meanwhile, is getting ready to move forward on its promise to regulate and legalize recreational pot use.

The first step in this process will be to establish a provincial, territorial and federal task force to hear from public health, substance abuse and public safety experts.

Health Canada says licensed medicinal marijuana producers are allowed to publish basic information about their products, such as name and price, but cannot otherwise promote it.
