BCIT students concerned about slow response following voyeurism case

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Students who attend the BCIT Burnaby campus are concerned they weren’t told earlier about a case of voyeurism that led to an arrest last November.

Burnaby RCMP arrested a 23-year-old, charging him with secretly observing or recording nudity in a private place.

Chieh Sen Yang is expected back in court today but the school’s president Kathy Kinloch only released a statement yesterday, emailing students as well.

“It would have been nice to have an announcement that this is a thing that has happened, (to say) watch out in the future and here are some suggestion of what to do and look for. I’m not so much worried for myself, but you’ve got a lot of young people. Many of these (BCIT) students are 19, 18, even 17,” says one man, during an early-morning walk across the campus.

In her statement, Kinloch called the behaviour “unacceptable.”

She says the school has numerous security measures including a safer walk program, blue emergency telephones and 24-hour security guards.

However, she says campus communication can improve adding “you have my assurance we will communicate with you in a timely way in the future.”

Many on campus this morning are hearing about it for the first time and say the communication can definitely be improved.
“If there was something like that, a man peeping into washrooms, that’s a pretty big thing and a good thing for students to know about. So I’d say the gap is pretty concerning,” says one student.

Mounties say there may be other potential victims out there and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
